According to media reports, when Amritpal Singh was going to Bathinda on Saturday, the police tried to stop him near Mehtabpur village in Jalandhar. Six of his supporters were allegedly detained from Mehtabpur. Allegedly the houses of his supporters have also been raided.

Amritpal Singh was in the news recently when his supporters attacked him with sticks, rods and swords outside the Ajnala police station in Amritsar, Punjab, on 23 February. Police broke the barricades. This ruckus was created by his supporters during the siege of the police station in protest against the arrest of Toofan Singh, a close aide of Amritpal.

Waris Punjab De was formed by actor and activist Deep Sidhu. After his death in an alleged accident in February 2022, Amritpal Singh took charge of it. Waris Punjab De was formed by Deep Sidhu to give platform to the political and social issues of Punjab.

Born in 1993, Amritpal Singh Sandhu is a resident of Jallupur Kheda village in Baba Bakala tehsil of Amritsar district. Studied till 12th standard. Went to Dubai for work in 2012 and worked in a travel agency there. Waris came back in 2022 to take over Punjab De.

Amritpal Singh, embroiled in several controversies, was recently booked on charges of kidnapping, theft and voluntarily causing hurt.

Like Deep Sidhu, Amritpal Singh also calls for a major political and social change in Punjab and believes that the farm laws should not have been seen in isolation.

But the choice of words is sharp and some people consider him more controversial than Deep Sidhu.

Amritpal Singh’s critics say that his speeches can lead the youth towards extremism and lead them on a path where they can be arrested or killed.
